ALL ABOUT FRENCH BULLDOGS

So Sparky tagged me tell all about French Bulldogs (AKA Frenchies, Frog Dogs)

A SHORT History: In the 19 century the bulldog was popular in England. The smaller bulldogs with erect ears were not as popular in England, but the French women were fond of these dogs. Soon this toy bulldog became the "fad" in Paris and eventually all the upper class homes in France had to have a "Bouledogue Francais". American visitors were immediately smitten with the dog, soon several dogs were brought back and bred in America. By 1913 we were one of the most popular breeds in America. Thankfully those French women had enough sense to realize how wonderful and important we truly are.

Temperment: We are known as clowns in a lap dog. We are very people oriented and crave attention. Frenchies need to be a member of the family and given lots of love. We are loving, sweet, playful, cuddly, and absolutely hilarious. We get along with mostly everyone, since we thrive on human attention, but sometimes we bond to one very special person. We can not survive without human attention and love. We can not and will not be ignored, we will make outrageous noises or stare until we are given the attention we deserve. I personally lay on my side and make deep sighing noises until I get a belly rub or kiss.

We are protective too ~ well kind of..... it's often known that Frenchies will bark and growl if someone is knocking at the door or lurking outside, but once inside the barking will turn to whines and whimpers of "PLAY WITH ME". Frenchies want to be friends with everyone! Hey, my rule is if someone comes into my house, they must play with me, or leave!

Some males or females can be aggressive, but mostly we all get along fine. We do not bark unless there is a reason. Some of us slobber or drool, but the majority don't. Some of us do well with training and some of us don't. We need lots of love and positive encouragement. We are also known as ruthles hunters of mice. That must be why I always want to chase and kill ants, spiders, birds, and squirrels.

Height and Weight: We are about 12 inches tall give or take a few inches. We can weigh anywhere from 19-about 30 pounds. I personally weigh about 25 pounds, I'm all muscles, wink, wink, kiss, kiss Fig.

Health Problems: We tend to have eye and respiratory problems. Because of our squshed in faces we have trouble breathing, we may wheeze, snore, and make lots of funny grunting noises. I make funny noises all the time, but after a few about ten minutes of hard play I need to chill out and drink water.

Living Conditions: We are sensitive to temperature extremes, overheating can cause heat stroke. We perfer cooler climates, but not too cool. I'm like mommy and wish it was fall all year round.

Exercise: We should NOT be exercised in hot weather, but we LOVE to run and play,we can play for hours. Some of us are really hyper and others of us are lazy, I tend to be a little of both. I HATE the heat and HATE the snow. When I get REALLY Hot from playing I know to sit on the central air vents and cool off. Luckily mommy plays with me inside with the centrail air when its SUPER HOT.

Did I leave anything out, my fellow Frenchie Bernard?

Thanks for sharing those info about your breed Balboa. Have a great weekend!

We agree with you and your Mommy. We wish it was fall all year round. With all this hot weather we keep telling ourselves that fall is just around the corner. We wish it would hurry up.

Thanks for telling us about your breed. Frenchies are a lot like pugs and bostons. We all have those adorable smooshed faces.

Whoa, we didn't realize you are a snow dog like me! Or does snow meet the qualification of extreme weather? I like the Fall too. I bet that season up here in Maine would be perfect for you. :)

Very neat info about you. We think you are awfully cute and it was great to get to know more about the history of your breed.

Interesting info, Balcoa. We didn't know all those things about you Frenchies. Glad you don't live here 'cause it can be pretty hot -- although right now, I think we're cooler than lots of the country.

Thanks for your good wishes!!
